ZF Aftermarket is expanding its repair portfolio for electrified drivetrains with new component-level solutions for electric motors, hybrid modules, inverters, mechatronics and electric drive unit reducers.

The new repair kits are part of ZF’s Maintain-Repair-Replace strategy, which is intended to give independent workshops more options when servicing ageing hybrid and battery-electric vehicles.

Rather than replacing complete assemblies, the approach enables technicians to intervene on specific drivetrain components when technically and economically appropriate. ZF also continues to offer remanufactured units for applications where replacement remains the preferred solution.

The company says more than 100 electric axle drive repair kit variants will become available in the coming weeks. The program builds on ZF’s experience in original-equipment electric propulsion systems, including more than six million electric motors produced for OEM applications.

Component-level repair for electrified drivetrains

The new E-Mobility Repair Kit family is designed around specific technical failure scenarios. Each kit combines the components required for a defined repair operation, with the aim of simplifying parts selection and avoiding unnecessary replacement of complete electric drive assemblies.

For electric motors, the Repair Kit EM targets ZF Gen 2 hybrid modules used in 8HP transmissions. The package combines rotor and stator assemblies, with end-of-line-tested components intended to restore the electric motor section of the hybrid transmission.

The Repair Kit IN addresses inverter-related failures in fourth-generation 8HP hybrid transmissions. Since the inverter controls the conversion of DC energy from the high-voltage battery into the AC power required by the electric motor, failures in this subsystem can directly affect propulsion performance and motor control. ZF’s kit groups the relevant replacement components into a single repair package.

For transmission mechatronics, the Repair Kit ME introduces OE-quality remanufactured units for fourth-generation 8HP transmissions. The mechatronic modules are remanufactured using original processes, components, software flashing and functional testing. According to ZF, this can reduce downtime compared with replacing the complete transmission.

The Repair Kit RD, meanwhile, focuses on electric drive unit reducers. It provides bearing components for defined failure modes, allowing workshops to repair the reduction stage without replacing the entire drive unit where the condition of the remaining components permits it.

Extending the service life of EV powertrains

The move reflects a broader change in EV servicing. As the European electric vehicle fleet matures, independent workshops are increasingly having to deal with failures not only in conventional chassis and braking systems but also in high-voltage propulsion hardware and power electronics.

Repairability at subassembly level can therefore become significant in controlling maintenance costs, particularly for vehicles that are no longer covered by the original warranty.

Beyond the electric drivetrain, the company says its aftermarket range currently covers approximately 92% of Europe’s Top 20 EV parc. The portfolio includes braking, steering, suspension, damping, e-drive fluids and electrified powertrain components, alongside high-voltage training and workshop support.

ZF is also expanding coverage for Chinese EV manufacturers entering the European market. By the first quarter of 2027, its European catalogue is expected to include up to 200 references for Chinese vehicle brands, with the target of covering ten of their most popular European models by the end of that year.
