The consolidation of its strategic partnership with the start-up Whylot, with a 21% minority stake, is aimed at developing and industrializing an innovative axial-flux electric motor for the automotive industry. It is a revolutionary technology for electrified applications that will be applied to electrified and electric powertrains, with the primary target of decreasing costs for hybrid powertrain groups, in the meantime decreasing CO2 emissions by 2.5 g/km according to the WLTP regulation (for the cars of B/C segments). With this move, Renault Group will be the first generalist manufacturer that will volume-manufacture an electric axial-flux motor starting from 2025.
«We are very satisfied – declared Philippe Brunet, Director of Thermal and Electric Powertrain Groups of the Alliance – with taking a further step forward in our relationship with Whylot, promising start-up specialized in the design and development of high-tech electric motors. This partnership, combined with the acquisition of a stake in the company’s capital, is a further proof of our strong French roots and of the industrial rooting of Renault Group in France, with the will of manufacturing there popular, affordable and cost-effective electric and electrified vehicles».
