Cylinders and suspensions: the choice of Ferrari Purosangue

TrueActiveℱ Spool Valve (TASV) technology by Multimatic comes into play by revolutionizing the role of shock absorbers, transforming a passive suspension into a completely active system.
Multimatic TASV shock absorber is pioneer to integrate a unique liquid cooled 48V three-phase brushless electric motor to deliver supplemental force through a bespoke twin-lead ball screw and gearbox assembly into the damper shaft and to the vehicle.
Each actuator group of the TASV shock absorber receives direct controls from a controller of the vehicle dynamics that constantly optimizes the vehicle’s performances and passengers’ drive comfort, far beyond what is possible with adaptive and semi-adaptive suspensions.
Alessandro Formenti, CEO at Vega Cylinders Company commented, complimenting on the choice of Ferrari Purosangue: “Imagine to drive your car without perceiving how you are moving. No longer feeling motor accelerations or pitching when cornering. It seems unbelievable, isn’t it? It seems a very distant choice from the sport driving. However it is the choice Ferrari made by installing some suspensions that annul drive sensations. These active suspensions have an electric 48V motor inside, connected with a special computer that reacts to the car’s stresses. Ferrari affirms this system helps fight load transfers and body movement, almost eliminating lateral body roll and shifting and distributing the load across the tyres. #Purosangue does not need anti-roll bars”.

Electrification grows by Citroen

They have recently announced the extension of Citroen C5 Aircross range: the SUV by the French brand now is also available with the new Hybrid 136 motors, based on the Hybrid 48V technology and also on a 48V battery that is recharged during some driving phases and a new Ă«-DCS6 gearbox that includes a 21-kW electric motor.
The electric synchronous permanent magnet motor has a maximum torque of 55 Nm, a 48V belt-driven starter motor and a new 6-speed Ă«-DCS6 electrified gearbox with dual clutch and no torque interruption. T
he battery is 48-V lithium ions with an available capacity of 432 Wh. The car is also equipped with a voltage converter, through which part of the electricity produced by the 48-V electric motor is also transformed into 12 V to power the car equipment.
Citroen stated that Hybrid 136 issues 15% of CO2 less than the equivalent non-electrified petrol version.

Repower, the new full electric boat designed for Venice Lagoon

Repower was protagonist at the Arsenal as technical partner of the fourth edition of the Venice Boat Show, with various solutions for sustainable mobility, including the new model of full-electric boat under construction in a Venetian shipyard. Repower was present as well, one of the first native “full electric” boats, cabin evolution of an open boat, rechargeable also by means of recharge solutions devised for e-cars.
The solutions for the electric boating have been joined by other instruments that often represent the standard continuation of this technology on earth, according to a true contemporaneous inter-modality logic. Coherently with this approach, there was E-Lounge, the multifunctional bench of Repower, designed by Antonio Lanzillo&Partners Studio and awarded with the prestigious Gold Compass ADI 2020 prize. “We are pleased to return to the reference meeting, in Italy and not only, for the sustainable boating, with a series of important novelties among which our first full electric native Venetian boat stands out”, stated Fabio Bocchiola, AD Repower Italia. “It is a model of taxi boat that faithfully interprets the identity of these vehicles, creating a very strong synergy between the conventional structure dictated by the characteristics of the lagoon and the new opportunities connected with the electric technology. The question is in fact not only zeroing the environmental impact, with a vehicle that moves without emissions, without vibrations and without noise, but also providing new spaces on board, where in the past a kind of mechanics linked with the thermal motor was present.”

Education and industry, MECSPE Bari 2023 to bridge the gap

Italian industry, with more than 453,000 active enterprises, remains solid and a fundamental pillar of our country’s economy. According to the analysis conducted by MECSPE, the leading international trade fair for the manufacturing industry organized by Senaf (Bari, November 23-25, 2023), more than 400,000 workers are expected to be employed in the industry from May to July, but the objective difficulty remains in finding qualified personnel, particularly skilled workers, as found by 63 percent of companies. And this is precisely the challenge that the industry will face in the coming years to respond to an industry that is changing its skin, becoming more technological, innovative, sustainable, and attractive to young people. Indeed, the younger generation is attractive to businesses, especially if they have the right training.

With this goal in mind, ITS – Istituti Tecnici Superiori, were born, which together with universities represent an important bridge between the world of industry and the world of work, providing students with solid technical and professional training in strategic sectors such as mechanics and Industry 4.0. Entrepreneurs have already realized the importance of this channel for finding partly qualified and predisposed young talents, so much so that 32 percent already work with them and 35 percent are interested in doing so in the near future. To date, there are 130 ITSs in Italy, including 14 in the Mechanics System, and according to INDIRE‘s latest data, 91 percent of graduates have found a job consistent with their course of study one year after graduation, effectively constituting a solution to the difficulty companies have in finding specialized figures.

All this thanks to the direct cooperation of companies. And it is precisely to facilitate the meeting between entrepreneurs and these realities that MECSPE has renewed its collaboration with a Bari-based excellence, the ITS A. Cuccovillo Foundation (Institute of the Mechanics-Mechatronics System), to organize the “Piazza della Formazione 4.0″. A space where the Institute and partner companies will tell, with students’ active input and practical demonstrations, about their experiences and opportunities for the area, confirming the importance of the link between business and education.

“The ITS of the Mechanics System today represents a valid channel both to train young people on issues related to Industry 4.0 and to help companies find personnel with professional characteristics that are difficult to find on the market”, comments Roberto Vingiani, Technical Director of the ITS A. Cuccovillo Foundation in Bari. “But in order to develop educational programs in line with the needs of the labor world a close and constant relationship with companies becomes essential. To date, our ITS averages 92 percent employment 12 months after graduation. In this context, MECSPE, thanks also to Training Plaza 4.0, is the ideal place to enhance the virtuous system of ITSs by recounting successful experiences with the involvement of partner companies and students. Once again this year, in fact, the initiative will actively involve young people to encourage them to improve their soft skills as well”.

“All along MECSPE aims to foster a constructive dialogue between companies and the labor world, especially now that the drive for innovation requires new skills – said Maruska Sabato, MECSPE Project Manager -. Companies and their production processes are markedly more evolved and there is a greater need for competent and up-to-date professionals capable of facing the challenges of Industry 4.0. Despite the positive trend in the sector, today there is a glaring gap on the resource availability front, also caused by schooling that is not always adequate. ITS can thus help bridge the gap between education and industry by providing young people with the skills they need to pursue a career path in manufacturing. With MECSPE, we will continue to promote the value of training in all its aspects because it represents, along with innovation, the engine for accelerating the development of the industry”.

Training will therefore be one of the main macro-themes of the Bari edition of MECSPE, along with innovation and sustainability, which represent the three cornerstones for the entire manufacturing industry. There is no growth without innovation, just as you cannot look to the future if you do not have the skills and a long-term vision that takes into account environmental impact. A mix of factors that MECSPE has always put at the center of the event, thanks to the involvement of companies, industry associations, and training institutions. All in a space of as much as 20,000 square meters designed to foster networking and training activities and transform Bari as a Southern and Central Italy manufacturing engine.

By MIT, an electric 1 MW motor to electrify aviation

The electric motor created by MIT engineers to power even large size aircrafts has the power of 1 megawatt. The motor might also be paired with a conventional jet engine to create a hybrid propulsion system. Until now, in fact, only small full-electric aircrafts have taken off, whereas to electrify larger and heavier jets, like airliners, megawatt motors are needed. The 1-megawatt motor developed by MIT might be a fundamental step towards this direction. For fully electric applications, the team provides the motor can be coupled with a source of electricity such as a battery or a fuel cell. Therefore, the motor could transform the electric energy into mechanical work to power the propellers of an aircraft. The electric machine might also be matched to a conventional turbofan jet engine to operate as hybrid drivetrain, providing electric propulsion during some flight phases. Zoltan Spakovszky, T. A. Wilson Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT declared: No matter what we use as an energy carrier (batteries, hydrogen, ammonia, or sustainable aviation fuel) independent of all that, megawatt-class motors will be a key enabler for greening aviation”. The professor added: “This is hard engineering, in terms of co-optimizing individual components and making them compatible with each other while maximizing overall performance. To do this means we have to push the boundaries in materials, manufacturing, thermal management, structures and rotordynamics, and power electronics”. (Picture @Airbus SAS 2023)

Incoming the electric boat by BMW

BMW has recently launched The Icon, a futuristic 13-metre boat – ready for production – equipped with foils and with two motors, designed to increase batteries’ duration by using less energy with the same speed. The boat exploits a pair of electric 100-kW motors by using 240 kWh of energy supplied by the six batteries of the BMW i3. The autonomy reaches over 50 nautical miles, corresponding to about 92 km. The cruise speed on foils is highlighted as 24 knots approximately, whereas the maximum one is estimated in about 30 knots.
Worth pointing out the Electric range (WLTP) of 488–560 in km and the power consumption of 23.3–20.8 kWh/100 km (combined).
Peter Dengler, head of The Icon project said: “Mobility on water is nearly ten times more energy-intensive than mobility on land. In the meantime, however, professional sailing has come up with solutions for substantially saving energy, paving the way for climate-friendly solutions. The decarbonization of mobility is already taking place in some areas. In other areas, however, there has not yet been innovation, so decarbonization has not even begun. There is currently no equivalent of luxury electric vehicles like the BMW i7 M70 offered on the water.”
