Delta Electronics is relocating its Scottish engineering operations to a new facility in the Glasgow area, strengthening its development activities in power conversion technologies for industrial electric vehicles used in material handling, warehouse automation and logistics.

The new engineering hub, located at One Rutherglen Links, will accommodate around 40 employees working across engineering, sales and support functions. The team will move from Delta’s existing site in East Kilbride later this year, while the new premises also provide capacity for future expansion.

Delta has maintained an engineering presence in Scotland for almost three decades. Over time, the operation has evolved into an R&D centre within the company’s Industrial Mobility Business, with a particular focus on power electronics for battery-powered industrial vehicles.

The multidisciplinary engineering team includes specialists in electrical and mechanical engineering, firmware development, PCB layout, automated testing, product management and project management. Its current development activities cover high-efficiency battery charging systems, charging modules and DC-DC converters designed for industrial electric vehicle platforms.

A key engineering objective is to increase power density while reducing manufacturing complexity and improving cost efficiency. These requirements are becoming increasingly relevant as electrification expands across forklifts, automated material-handling equipment and other vehicles operating in warehouses and logistics environments.

New validation laboratory

An important element of the Glasgow facility is a new product validation laboratory. According to Delta, the laboratory will allow engineers to reproduce customer operating conditions, verify new product designs and demonstrate the performance of power conversion solutions.

This capability is intended to bring development and validation activities closer together, helping engineering teams evaluate products under conditions representative of their intended applications.

The facility covers more than 11,100 square feet across two floors and has been designed to bring engineering and commercial teams into the same working environment. Its location close to Glasgow also gives Delta access to the region’s engineering skills base and technical universities, potentially supporting recruitment and future academic collaborations.

For Delta, the move forms part of a broader effort to develop power and energy management technologies for electrified industrial applications. While passenger electric vehicles tend to dominate discussions around e-mobility, industrial electric vehicles present their own engineering requirements, including high utilisation rates, demanding duty cycles and the need for efficient and reliable charging and onboard power conversion.

Battery chargers and DC-DC converters therefore play a central role in determining system efficiency, thermal performance, packaging and vehicle availability. Increasing power density can reduce the size and weight of these components, while improvements in conversion efficiency can help limit energy losses and thermal-management requirements.

The new Glasgow engineering hub will concentrate on these areas as Delta develops power conversion products for the next generation of electric industrial platforms.
