Stellantis invests in sodium-ion batteries

The venture capital fund of Stellantis, Stellantis Ventures, has announced they will take part as a strategic investor in Tiamat, a French spin-off of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), which develops and markets the technology of sodium-ion batteries. It is a technology that offers a lower cost per kilowatt/hour and it is lithium-and cobalt-free, granting higher sustainability. The sodium ion technology promises more convenient energy storage than the current technology of lithium-ion batteries.

“Finding new options to rely on more sustainable and economically accessible batteries that use raw materials with broad availability is one of the key ambitions of our Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, according to which we will zero our net carbon emissions by 2038,” declared Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer from Stellantis.

In addition to the sodium-ion battery with Tiamat, Stellantis is investing in other alternative technologies for energy storage, such as the solid-state batteries with Factorial Energy and the lithium-sulfur chemistry with Lyten Inc.

Tiamat will use the proceeds of the fund-raising plan, of which also Stellantis Ventures is part, to implement a plant of sodium-ion batteries in France. In the early phases, batteries will be intended for electrical appliances and stationary storage applications, whereas in the future the production will be increased with specific second-generation products for BEV vehicles.

The electric expansion of Audi in China

In Changchun, in China, they are accomplishing the building of the new manufacturing plant of Audi FAW NEV Company, which plays a crucial role in the electrification strategy of Audi for China. Here, they are about to build a cutting-edge factory exclusively dedicated to the production of full-electric Audi models, which promises new standards in digitalization, efficiency, and sustainability.
It is a course started in March 2021, when Audi and FAW Group established the Audi Faw Nev Company in Changchun, setting up the first joint venture in China where Audi is the majority shareholder. In June 2022, they started the construction of the new manufacturing site and in September 2023 they inaugurated the Test Center Changchun, a forefront structure able to test simultaneously up to 70 vehicles. The factory will be soon ready, and the start of the mass production of full-electric models based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) is foreseen by the end of 2024, followed by the release on the market of the first Audi electric model in 2025.

Slot to increase the electric motor’s efficiency

The designers of electric motors are constantly researching efficient insulation solutions that can provide more efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability. The new slot liner in Ajedium™ Paek has been developed to satisfy all these criteria. The Ajedium™ Paek slot liner joins the current Ajedium™Peek slot liners, devised for the insulation of electric 800-Volt motors. As communicated by Roberta Colombo, Marketing Manager Electrical Power Grid of Syensqo, was recently born thanks to the extraordinary assembly of Solvay shareholders and 99.53% of positive votes.

PAEK slot liners use AvaSpire® PAEK material, which offers a chemical composition resembling PEEK. Similarly to Ajedium™ PEEK slot liners, Ajedium™ Paek creates the potential to increase the electric motor’s efficiency by 2%. The efficiency increase is the direct result of the use of a thinner slot liner, which allows a higher filling than the copper slot, improving the heat transfer and reducing the electric resistance, meanwhile reaching the electric insulation and the duration of the electric motor. “The rise of electric motor efficiency in the order of 1% enables a weight saving from 7.5 to 15 kg and an economic saving from $ 66 to $ 159 for each electric motor. The use of Ajedium™ PAEK slot coating can also lead to a reduction of CO2 emission”, Colombo declared.

The first scooter with aluminium-ion battery is coming

Sym has presented PE3, the hybrid scooter concept under fulfilment, which might be close to a mass production. Among the peculiarities, there is the innovative lithium-free aluminium ion battery, manufactured by the Taiwanese Aph ePower company, able to make recycling sustainable. It is a technology that assures longer charge cycles than conventional lithium-ion ones, faster charges, and even more stability. The scooter is equipped with a fully electric motor with 4 kW power, while the small thermal engine starts operating only when it is necessary to charge the battery, with great performance benefits.

Damen presents an ultra-innovative electric boat

The Dutch shipbuilding company Damen has released a full electric boat that can be recharged while it is in motion exploiting the present offshore wind power turbines. The ship has a length of 70 metres and hosts 60 cabins, of which 40 reserved to the technical staff.

With 36 yards distributed all over the world, Damen has specifically searched for collaborations with companies specialized in the wind power sector, precisely to make the boat an example unique in the world that features two versions. One full electric, with LFP batteries for 15 MWh overall, and the version equipped with a diesel engine as backup for the requirements and a battery of just 10 MWh.

In general, the approach adopted by Damen is certainly innovative, because many electric vessels are under construction, but none has the possibility of being directly connected with wind power plants to be recharged at a very high power while it is in motion.
