Bosch Engineering showcases its latest innovation for marine e-mobility: the SMG 230 electric motor. Presented for the first time in Italy, the motor has been designed for 400V to 800V systems and specifically tailored for recreational boats and larger yachts.
The SMG 230 delivers impressive figures for its class. Under optimal temperature and voltage conditions, it provides up to 200 kW of continuous power and around 250 Nm of torque. Thanks to 800V technology, the motor’s power density is significantly increased. Compared to a 400V system of equivalent weight, the SMG 230 supplies 80 kW more power, while offering the same performance with more compact dimensions and substantially lower weight.
Inverter with SiC Semiconductors
Another highlight of Bosch’s solution is the inverter, engineered for up to 800V systems. It employs silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors that enable faster switching operations, resulting in minimal energy loss and efficiency levels above 99%. Reduced thermal dissipation also translates into greater overall system reliability, a critical factor for marine applications where cooling efficiency is a key challenge.
Complete modular electrification kit
The full electrification package includes electronic control units, inverters, electric motors, and transmissions for both 400V and 800V configurations. These components are based on proven Bosch technologies widely used in automotive, commercial vehicle, and off-highway applications, ensuring durability and long-term reliability in harsh marine environments.
Clients have the flexibility to select and integrate individual compatible components into their own marine systems. Furthermore, Bosch Engineering provides dedicated technical support, assisting with integration and system optimization for the vessel’s specific operating conditions. This approach not only enhances performance but also contributes to significant reductions in noise and emissions on the water.
