ABB has announced the launch of AMXE, an innovative marine electric motor designed for small and medium-sized electric and hybrid vessels, as well as open deck installations.

Compact, powerful and quiet, AMXE represents a step forward in sustainable propulsion at sea. Drawing on ABB’s experience in high-intensity industries such as mining and rail, AMXE has been developed to withstand the most extreme conditions: continuous exposure to salt water, vibrations, shocks and corrosive environments.

Its water-cooled design eliminates the need for ventilation systems, minimizing noise and vibration for a more comfortable navigation experience. With the highest power density ever achieved in ABB’s portfolio, AMXE offers high performance with a small footprint and weight, a key advantage for vessels where every centimeter and every kilogram counts.

The compact design and smart terminal box facilitate installation in a variety of environments, both in the engine room and outdoors. The marine electric motor is highly customizable to suit a wide range of operational needs and ensures maximum reliability over time, also thanks to the support of ABB’s global network and its local experts.

The new motor will be previewed at the Nor-Shipping show, alongside ABB’s HES880 inverter, already available for marine applications. These technologies, along with ABB’s broad marine portfolio, demonstrate the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and the electrification of the future.

“With AMXE we offer a powerful and compact solution, designed to address the real challenges of the naval sector and accompany operators towards more sustainable and future-ready fleets,” said David Segbers, Global Product Manager Lead for the Mobile e-Power part.
