The automotive landscape in China has just been redefined with the unveiling of the Buick Electra L7 REEV, the latest innovation from SAIC-GM’s rapidly evolving electrification portfolio. At the heart of this new flagship sedan is the advanced Zhen Long, propulsion system—a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) architecture designed to deliver both performance and endurance, setting new benchmarks in the segment.

The Zhen Long system pairs a high-output single electric motor with a next-generation 1.5-liter hybrid engine developed in collaboration with SAIC. The electric motor delivers a category-leading 252 kW (343hp), ensuring spirited acceleration matched by few competitors: the Electra L7 sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds.

Supporting this performance is the Ultium 2.0 battery pack, optimized for rapid energy delivery and sustained output. The battery system can provide up to 315 kW at full charge and consistently maintains 260 kW even at lower states of charge, guaranteeing uniform power for the electric motor throughout a broader operating range.

Extended Range

What truly differentiates the Buick Electra L7 REEV is its remarkable total range of up to 1,400km on a single cycle (battery plus range extender), a figure that places it at the forefront of extended-range EVs worldwide. The internal combustion component is a 1.5-liter engine producing 115 kW (156hp) and 230 Nm of torque, paired with a 100 kW generator to recharge the battery system efficiently while driving. This configuration eliminates range anxiety and allows for seamless long-distance journeys, particularly crucial for Chinese consumers with diverse travel needs.

Supporting the car’s robust performance under varying conditions is the proprietary Coolgrid thermal management system, protected by 31 patents. This technology maintains optimal operating temperatures for the battery, power electronics, and electric motor—even under extreme ambient conditions such as high-altitude climbs or deep-freeze climates. The innovative Silentium NVH technology further refines the driving experience, reducing start-up noise to less than 0.5 dB, ensuring outstanding comfort and cabin refinement.
